Here is my planned daily schedule to complete the Pennine Way. Nearly 320 miles and over 17,000m of ascent (twice the height of Everest) in 3 weeks.
I have tried not to exceed 20 miles per day, yet on the very first day I have 20.74 miles planned. Because of this I intend to walk the first 2 miles on my day of arrival in Edale on Wednesday 23 September 2010 to Upper Booth campsite, leaving only 19 miles for day 1. This is because there is not another campsite between Upper Booth and Crowden.
Depending on how I feel I may walk a few miles further so that day one is not such a baptism of fire, but this will mean wild camping without facilities.
In this way there is in built flexibility which I suspect will mean this schedule is not strictly adherred too. The idea is to give me some way of monitoring progress and hopefully not slipping behind schedule.
Usually all of my walks are planned direct from an OS Explorer 1:25000 map. I find this makes the walks more spontaneous and in my own perverse way gives me the illusion that I am possibly taking a route that has not been taken before.
This is perfectly valid when planning circular routes to visit a number of peaks on a particular day or even over several days. Because the number of start points, the number and order in which the peaks are visited along with the different routes between those peaks can almost give an infinite number of combinations could conceivable produce a route that has never been walked before. The downside is that you can miss out on a lot of local information that can only be found in guidebooks or extensive research on the web or in a library.
However on a long distance walk especially on one of the longest in the UK it is important (to me anyway) that I adhere as closely as possible to the route as I can.
My approach has therefore been to still plot the route from the OS Explorer map identify as many campsites as possible and split the route into daily chunks based on location of campsites with facilities.
I then bought a guidebook and went for one published by Trailblazer as well as the more well known Cicerone version. Between them there should be enough information to keep me on track.
Both these books see a 16 day schedule as leisurely, but they do not include any diversions to bag many of the peaks I intend to visit.
Taking these into account I have come up with a 21 day schedule which gives me only 3 nights on wild campsites, one near Mickle Fell (located on the Army tank range at Warcop) and 2 nights in the Cheviots. The Cheviots are Englands most northerly mountains and with only 6 to visit I can't help thinking it is worthwhile spending 2 extra days on the walk to visit these on days 19 and 20 rather than drive all the way from Suffolk to Northumberland to bag them at a later date. We will see if I feel the same after nearly 3 weeks under canvas.
Details of the hills/mountains I intend to visit can be found by following the link against each hill name to a very good web site http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/ which I use for counting how many hills I have climbed. Each category of hill is listed along with a description of how each hill type is defined. e.g. The definition of a Nuttall is "any summit of 2000ft (610m) or more which rises above its surroundings on all sides by at least 50ft (15m)".

Each day or whenever I get a signal I hope to upload the daily events. This of course depends on me having a mobile signal, power for my phone and more importantly me mastering this new fangled modern technology thingy.
